Our Sincere Thanks and Appreciation to Norman J Gray who has spent countless hours and several years compiling and publishing our Newsletter for us. Norm is leaving South Florida for the outer banks of North Carolina where he has plans to restore the family homestead at Cape Hatteras NC to its former glory. Norm plans to remain a member of our South Florida Chapter - you don’t escape that easily Norm - and we look forward to visits from time to time and certainly hope to continue receiving articles or other contributions to our Newsletter / WebSite, as he will be in closer proximity to Fort Bragg than any of us, and should be able to keep us posted on the latest from home.

Norm and his wife Marneen have been virtually indispensable in keeping the food cooking and the soda pop flowing at our regular picnic meetings. We’re going to need several volunteers to pick up the slack and help out where needed at future functions. Norm and Marneen for years opened their home to the Chapter for regular meetings, an act of hospitality which everyone has to agree was above and beyond the call of duty. Please let us know if you can barbecue, cook or otherwise assist as they’ll be difficult to replace. After all guys, we can’t leave Beverlee Niskanen to do ALL the work - can we?

Many Thanks To Ron Stirlacci and Gus Vass for representing our 82nd Airborne Division Association South Florida Chapter in the Posting Of The Colors at the recent World War II Glider Pilots’ Reunion which was held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Fort Lauderdale on September 29th at 8:30AM. For those who are interested in participating in Honor Guard activities, Don Moffett, 1-305-453-9991, has a few uniforms belonging to the Chapter which are available, and any help you can give will be appreciated..

Picnic and Annual Elections - Sunday, September 17th, 2000

Take I-95 to Hollywood Florida
Exit At Sheridan Street or Stirling Road - Go West about a mile to Park Road
Turn North from Sheridan or South from Stirling another mile or so
to the main park entrance - Follow the signs to Pavilion #14

The September 17th picnic begins Sunday at about 11:00 AM for the early-birds, about noon for the rest of us.

This is our annual Elections meeting where 82nd Airborne Division Association South Florida Chapter Officers and Directors for the coming year are nominated and elections are held.

Bring your wife ( and/or girlfriend ) but not both, thank you. Kids and grand-kids of all ages are welcome at what is a really enjoyable family affair. The covered Airborne pavilion is on the banks of a peaceful lake with fish, turtles, ducks and iguanas wandering about. Before lunch there're coffee and donuts for the aforementioned early-birds. Most everyone is busy chowing down by noon and the eating and socializing take up the better part of the day.

There's a short business meeting which takes place generally around 1:30 or so and never seems to interfere too much with the consumption of the complementary burgers, hotdogs and cold drinks which abound. If you plan on eating more than your share, bring a covered dish of your choice so the rest of us won't starve.

We supply coffee and sodas - if you want beer or wine just bring your own. All members and their families are welcome to attend. Troopers who are not yet members but who want to come to the picnic and check out the South Florida 82nd Airborne Chapter are welcome to do so, and may sign up on the spot to become members themselves. A new membership in The South Florida Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association may just be the best $12.50 you'll spend this year.

The meeting breaks up somewhere after 2PM depending on how many war-stories remain untold as of mid-afternoon. Its amazing how small the airborne community really is and how many troopers show up at the meetings and picnics who were in the same units and stations - and who have experiences and friends in common from their active duty days.

See You There ... AIRBORNE All The Way
